DAY 149 - The Spectacular Fjords of Norway

Aug 15 - Oslo to Bergen by Train
No sleeping on this train.  The scenery is fantastic and it was a beautiful day to travel - very few clouds in the sky and that is rare.  It rains 300 days out of the year.

Geologically, a fjord  is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by glacial erosion. The word comes to English from Icelandic. There are many fjords on the coasts of Norway, Iceland, and Greenland.
We got some fantastic pictures on the fast train ride.  We were very happy about that as that was the whole reason for coming to Norway.
Great reflection in the water

There were small villages along the way.  Notice the hut in the background and the VERY interesting grass roof.  We saw several along the way as we traveled on the train.

...and boats on the water.
Cute little houses - note the cool-looking roof.

More reflections

The water is such a cool color

We made it to the city of Bergen.

Love the colors of all the buildings.

We'll talk about the history tomorrow.

We happened to come into the town square in the afternoon, only a couple of hours  before a FREE concert by the Symphony....my FAVORITE orchestral suite - THE PEER GYNT SUITE by Grieg.  It was fantastic!
Ladies in native folk dress were passing out the programs.

This guy was a one-man band performing before the concert.

Edvard Grieg is a composer that is widely known in Norway.

We had a good seat on a park bench and there was a screen we could see.

We walked to where our hosts lived, but we got lost and it was starting to rain very hard.

We saw a beautiful mansion along the way.

Our host cooked a great meal which tasted so good.

Strawberry chiffon pie for dessert.
More about Tora and her two children tomorrow.  We spent three evenings with them and had a VERY nice time PLUS I have to tell you "The Egg Incident."
