DAY 128 – Snails & Slugs & Rosehips

July 25 - Countryside Livin' in Denmark

Klintholm Havn is a fishing village and a popular tourist resort on the south coast of Møn, Population:  200 This is the village where we rented our bikes.  We left early from our host's house for the 15 minute bike ride to return the bikes.
There was a special rock monument for May 5th, 1945, Liberation Day for Denmark.  This same day, a barge with 370 prisoners from the Nazi camp near Danzig washed up at this spot.  Close to death from starvation and illness, their captors had ordered them to sea to face their fate on the Baltic Sea.  In 1995, this monument was erected to honor the people in this community for saving their lives.  It also pays tribute to all those who never reached the outstretched hands of the Danish rescuers.

Rose hips are just now coming into season.   Rose hips are used for jam, jelly, syrup, soup, beverages, pies, bread, and wine. They can also be eaten raw, like a berry, if care is used to avoid the hairs inside the fruit.  The redder they are, the softer and sweeter.  They are one of the highest plant sources of Vitamin C, (preventing colds and flu), so we like to eat several of them when we take hikes.
The pretty rose hips are coming on strong here in Denmark.
After we returned the bikes, we started hiking back to where Juergen & Hilary live - about 45 minutes.
Not sure what the short wooden stubs are.

We saw some cute artistic things in the sand.  Looks like someone has been busy at work.
Another creation - looks like a fortress around a city.
This cow is not interested in me at the least.
The Spanish slug is a highly invasive slug species.  Our hosts say they've been particularly bad this year.
These guys are so UgLy - ick!

Arion vulgaris juvenile - not in the USA yet -thank goodness

Peek-a-Boo...we see you!

These little guys were EVERYWHERE!

Welcome to our Party

Arion vulgaris - Adult

We found so many smooshed on the trail

I thought these were a very cool plant on the path

This is their home from the side

Pasta for dinner

This was one of their neighbor's home
We worked quite hard in their garden, helping them pick berries and cherries.  It reminded us of what we do at home when we're in Idaho.

They also have several varieties of flowers in their yard.

They had 50 cherry trees and about 25 plum trees - the birds ate most of the cherries.

Chickens want fed - there was one big rooster

A HUGE abundance of raspberries

They had several areas where they ate - here was one that was covered.

This was their back yard - so gorgeous

Everything was well landscaped

The lane down to their home

We made raspberry-banana-yogurt fruit smoothies.

I picked and picked two varieties of choke cherries.

I forgot to take a picture of our "couch", but we actually had our own bedroom with two single beds.  The room was small, but comfortable.  It was nice to have some time to do laundry and relax.  I actually forgot to get two pairs of Rich's underwear, so Juergen mailed it to us in Sweden a couple of weeks later.  We joked that they were"well-traveled" underwear.

On to Copenhagen tomorrow.
