DAY 19 - 20 hr. Ferry Ride Turns into 50 hours!

April 7 - The Slow Boat to China (I mean Santorini)

We were told that the slow ferry boat to Santorini was old and not so dependable. Oh boy – that was definitely true! You see, the only way to get off the island of Rhodos is by plane or ferry. The plane is quite expensive, so we ruled that out right away and the ferry only runs every few days during the winter season which is now and will be for a couple more weeks. I tried to book the ferry months ages ago to no avail. I sent emails to the company and had some of our couch surf hosts check into it. What we eventually found out was not to worry about it because times and dates always change.

The ferry was scheduled to leave at 2 a.m. They told us we could board at midnight so we were going to catch a late bus close to our host family's house. Thankfully, they offered to take us downtown to the port after they looked online to find that the ferry was quite aways out. We finally left their house at 4 a.m. Luckily we had booked a cabin on the ferry so we could sleep and did so until about 11 a.m.

A beautiful little church on one of the islands we stopped at

Hillsides and hillsides of ruins of walls from long ago

Churning of the waters as the boat turns

The swimming pool is not open -  too cold!

We stopped at several islands along the way and ate the food we had brought on with us. I ate only a little as I didn't want to get sick again! I imagined that the ferry was the “Titanic” as I toured the four level boat with dining rooms, dance hall, a pool, and other amenities. I ALWAYS got lost and would wander and wander around the boat until finally finding our room. We watched the endless sea go by us from out the windows and thankfully I didn't get sick this time. There were many trucks and cargo on the bottom level. It's amazing how much they can fit on -this ship. We got a great night's sleep.
