DAY 18 - How to do 100 things in One Day!

April 6 - Back to Rhodos Museum, Street Walking, Filerimos and the Ancient City of Ialysos, Pizza & Music

We decided to finish our tour of the Archaelogical Museum since they told us we could go back. It was a delightful morning going through so much history in all the rooms and we were the only ones there. I enjoyed, in particular, seeing all the relics that were buried with the people. It reminds me of the Mexican culture where they build a little house for the cemetery and put on display many of the special things for the person that has died.
Rhodes Town - NEW & OLD
Draw Bridge just like in the Fairy Tales

Beautiful Mosaic Tile floors

Purplish Head bust - guess the rock was a different color

Interesting history about mosaic floors

Beautiful gardens in the museum - used to be a hospital for the Knights

Sponges for Sale!
More kinds of sponges

We went back to our host family's house and had a bite to eat. They then took us to see the Butterfly Pavilion, but it was closed. We did walk up to the bridge and took time to look around and what a lush, beautiful rain forest it is there.

the wonderful Sandu Family (without Nafeli)

Nafeli was at a music seminar, so she couldn't come. We went on up the hill to where some deserted Italian villages are. The Italians, of course, had to leave quickly during WWII when they lost the war and it looks as if most did not come back. This is a fountain with fresh fish in it and there was running water coming from the mountainside which we all filled our containers.
Cute Little Italian Church

Legend of the Deer on Rhodos

They showed us a cute little church that is obviously still being used today.

A deserted Italian Fountain

Victor says this tree is 400 years old

Filerimos is situated near the village of Trianta, which stands on the same site as the Doric city of Ialysos, in ancient times.  We visited a beautiful Italian Hotel where the boys had Spinach Pie, a very popular and traditonal dish in Greece.

We had tea time at a beautiful Italian hotel.
Larissa took us to see the sunset from a hill above their house. We went to a path that led to a huge cross. It was signficant to Christ's walking the path before he waws crucified. The we saw dozens of peacocks. They were everywhere, but had begun flying up to the trees where they would sleep for the night. Beautiful site!
There were hundreds of peacocks at this site

They all flew up into the trees after the sun set.

They thought Shari was one of them as she called to them  :)

The road that Christ took to his death

This was the most amazing site, especially at the end of the day!
We then came home to make an American Carrot Cake for the family. Aries helped me and we had so much fun! He is the same age as Hailey, Benjamin, and Kylianne, so I was thinking of them as I worked with him. He speaks very little English, and I speak no Greek, but we managed to communicate very well.
What a good helper in the kitchen he is!

Aries is amazing with a knife!

See our happy face in the dough?  We had so much fun!

Nafeli added some dried strawberries I had brought from our garden.  YUM!

We also  prepared the ingredients that Rich and I had bought for our “American” Pizza. It turned out to be a “Greek-American” pizza, because Larissa used some of her ingredients and gave me many tips. I think it probably one of the best pizzas I had ever eaten.

Olive and feta cheese

Vegetarian Pizza

Salami with almonds and vegetables - YUM!
Afterwards, we enjoyed music with Aries on the drum ( no pictures :( video later), Nafeli on the flute, Victor on the keyboard, and I sang. They are very talented! We talked about practicing and how to get even more proficient on their instruments. Nafeli is going to start getting up earlier to practice!
We Love You Larissa, Victor, Nafeli, and Aries!
