April 5 - Day Excursion to Lindos
About this time, Rich had about had it with going to ruins, but we're in Greece...it's something that has to be done. Not only is Lindos the site of some wonderful history, but it is sits on a very beautiful part of Rhodes Island, on the east side. Above the modern town rises the acropolis of Lindos, a natural citadel which was fortified successively by the Greeks, the Romans the Byzantines the Knights of St. John and the Ottomans.

Every city has a clock tower |
|
The city of Lindos |
In classical times the acropolis of Lindos was dominated by the massive temple of Athena Lindia, which attained its final form in around 300 BC.
|
The beautfiul Temple Lindia |
In Hellenistic and Roman times the temple precinct grew as more buildings were added.
In early medieval times these buildings fell into disuse, and in the
14th century they were partly overlaid by a massive fortress built on
the acropolis by the Knights of St John to defend the island against the
Ottomans.
|
Do I take a mule up to the top or should I just walk? |
Enjoy some pictures we took hiking up and from the top of the Acropolis in Lindos....a beautiful hike and a beautiful day!
|
Guess I'll just "hoof" it up there! |
|
St. John's Bay - It is said that John, from the Bible, landed here with his boat. |
|
We made it - back to reality! |
When we returned on the bus, we walked around Rhodos some more.
We had another wonderful meal with the Sandu family of
chicken meatballs, roasted vegetables, palenta, home-made bread, and
a yummy vegetable sauce. Everything was so good!
|
Polenta - a dish using cornmeal, butter, water, and cheese |
|
And for dessert......a sesame seed Nutella spread, but much healthier! |
After dinner, we had a nice evening sharing some music together. They like my rendition of "Alley Cat" and some other classical pieces on the piano, then Nafeli played the piano and also flute. She is quite talented! (And so is her dad!)
|
Aries will join them tomorrow on his drum, but for now it's just flute & keyboard. |
|
Nafeli, 13, has only been playing for 2 years and is already playing some difficult pieces. |
