May 25 & 26 -Another Croatian Experience
From the early days of Roman rule, Zadar gained its Roman urban
character and developed into one of the most flourishing centres on the
eastern Adriatic coast, which lasted for several
hundred years. To read the history of Zadar was so very interesting. What amazing tragedies and plagues this city in Croatia has overcome.

Old Roman Forum |
We were so glad to meet Marij and Matej..we called them M & M. First off, we took showers, and then slept a long time after our week on the sailboat. It felt great! We did laundry and that also felt good to have clean clothes again.
|
This warm soup was a great starter! |
|
Meatballs, mashed potatoes and cucumbers in a yogurt sauce - delish! |
|
They welcomed us with a very nice meal after such an ordeal. |
|
Thank-you M & M for such a nice stay in Zadar |
|
Their flat was very small, but we felt at home right away on their "couch" |
|
We even had a couple of gerbil "buddies" to keep us company while we slept. |
|
Laundry on the balcony overlooking a soccer field. |
|
This is their kitchen with bath and their bedroom on the right. LOVE the colors! |
We toured the historical city of Zadar and saw many historical sites in the olde town.
|
This building seems to be leaning like the Tower of Pisa - don't you think? |
|
Zadar is a port town right long the Adriatic |
|
No more of those boring poses |
The
Sea Organ is an architectural object located in Zadar and an experimental musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble
steps. It was built in an effort to draw tourists to the monotonous
concrete wall that was built after the devastation of WWII. It helped
to beautify the coastline and it did just that. It draws many tourists as they look out to the sea on a warm spring day.
Below are photos of a unique architectural phenomena built into the concrete next to the Sea Organ. Later will be photos at night which are amazing! They lit up!

Time for a siesta |

The Monastery of St. Francis Assisi - |
The
Monastery of St. Francis Assisi is a Roman Catholic Franciscan
monastery dating back to the 13th century. The monastery, along with a church of the same name, was built around 1221. Throughout the centuries of its history the monastery was the focal
point of religious life in the city of Zadar. It was also home to the
Franciscan school, precursor to today's University of Zadar.

Have you heard of "The Old Man and the Sea?" |

This fisherman is selling star fish as his cute puppy looks on |

A Croatian teen shows me how to do her cute hair-do...don't think I can do it, though. |
|
2nd Dinner with M & M - yummy vegetables in a sauce with to-fu. |
That evening we had to go back out to see if we could hear the lovely Sea Organ playing its tune. It only works if the waves are just right. Unfortunately it was a very calm evening, but we had a wonderful photo opportunity with a beautiful sunset. Alfred Hitchcock came to Zadar once and said he saw the most beautiful sunsets in the whole world there, so we walked quickly back to the old town and the Adriatic to experience it.
|
Very beautiful along with the sunset |
|
We met a cute Irish couple on their honeymoon |
The sun has gone to bed and so must I........Good-bye!
|
A look at St. Donat's Church before we head back and to bed |
