May 5 – Vatican Museum – CLOSED
Vatican City – New Pope speaks
and it's packed
Wouldn't you know it? Our first day
in Rome and it happened to be on a Sunday and it happened to be
raining. Sistine Chapel and Museum is closed on Sundays, so we
decided to visit Vatican city instead. It was crazy busy with people
and you could hardly move, but we did hear beautiful music and get to
see the new Pope Francis speaking on a large screen.
We saw lots of pretty umbrellas in Piazza San Pietro |
There he is! ...the new Pope Francis |
"So Many people! Ok - I'll try to grin and bear it!" |
Our first site in Vatican City...the corner of the place where everyone stands to get tickets to go into the museum and the Sistine Chape, but today no line because it's closed! Augghh!!

The outside of the Vatican |
Before the sun totally came out, we visited Trevi Fountain. It is one of the most famous fountains in the world. It was finished in 1762. A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. An estimated 3,000 euros (nearly $4,000) are thrown into the fountain each day.
Get ready, Rome...I'm coming again some day! |
In the afternoon, after the sun came back out, we went to the Piazza del Popolo to get a ticket for the Gelato Festival - we got 5 Gelatos each - YUM!!
We're all winners |
What a great guy to pose with me and GREAT gelato, also! |
There are lots of fountains that you can drink from or fill your bottles from |
What a day this has turned out to be - no more rain |
